Compliance Considerations

The state of North Carolina, the UNC Board of Governors, the U.S. Department of Education, accreditors, and even the governments of other states want high quality learning environments for students in our programs, and they want them to succeed. But there sure is a lot to comply with. The School of Professional Studies (SPS) helps online and off-campus site-based programs navigate in this environment.

Accreditation Concerns

UNC Charlotte is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate degrees. Degree-granting institutions also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Questions about the accreditation of UNC Charlotte may be directed in writing to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30033-4097, by calling (404) 679-4500, or by using information available on SACSCOC’s website (www.sacscoc.org).

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte was reaffirmed by SACSCOC for the next ten years. The decision was made at the December 2023 Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

SACSCOC Policy on Distance & Correspondence Education

The School of Professional Studies (SPS) complies with SACSCOC policies for the authorization and delivery of online and off-campus distance education programs. The SACSCOC Policy Statement on Distance Education and Correspondence Courses describes curriculum and instructional expectations and the online student verification requirement.

Approved Off-Campus Instructional Sites

State Authorization

The availability of our programs in a particular state or territory depends on our ability to comply with the unique regulations of that state or territory. State Authorization refers to the need to obtain approval from a jurisdiction prior to offering educational programs there.

Out-of-State Academic Activity Coordinating Council (OoSAACC)

Established by University Policy 210 in 2019, OoSAACC acquires and maintains the approvals necessary to offer academic programs in all the jurisdictions in which UNC Charlotte operates. For more information on this important work, visit OoSAACC’s website.

State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA)

The primary way UNC Charlotte obtains and maintains authorization to offer programs in other states is through participation in SARA. This relationship is renewed annually through North Carolina’s Portal Entity, SARA North Carolina. Nationwide, the SARA community is coordinated by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA).

Complaint Process for Students in Online Programs & Courses

Because the institution participates in SARA, students enrolled in our online courses and programs have additional avenues of recourse if a complaint arises.
